Geert Jan Biessels

Geert Jan Biessels is professor of neurology at the UMC Utrecht Brain Center. His major research interest is vascular cognitive impairment, focusing on novel imaging markers to support better diagnosis and contribute to personalized treatment for patients with small vessel disease.

Using 7T-MRI his group was the first to detect cerebral microinfarcts in vivo. Currently they are zooming in on structure and function of the small vessels themselves. He is addressing functional impact of vascular lesions through brain network analyses and lesion symptom mapping.

He is PI of several national and international VCI research networks. He actively collaborates with colleagues in Munich, Edinburgh, Boston, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Singapore and participates in the H2020 program SVDs@target, https://www.svds-at-target.eu/. In 2017 he initiated the MetaVCIMap consortium, to support large multicenter lesion symptom mapping studies in VCI; https://metavcimap.org/ .

He has mentored over 40 PhD students and has over 300 publications. He is a Vidi and Vici laureate and received the senior investigator award of the European Stroke Organisation in 2015.
